Getting Your Children To Make Healthy Choices

admin @ 12:00 am

You may feel that it is a struggle to get your children to make healthy choices when it comes to food. Nowadays, children are bombarded by enticing advertisements marketing high calorie food choices. This leaves them asking for unhealthy food options that provide little nutritional value. However, you can take control of what your child eats through determination and focus. Be strong and firm if your children are stubborn about establishing a new healthy eating routine. When your children refuse healthy meals and snacks take the items away and save it for later. Your child will get hungry and ask for something to eat. Then, you can pull out the food items that you saved for them.

Model the behavior that you want from your child by making healthy food choices. Children learn by copying what they see others doing. It is hard to get children to eat broccoli when they see their parents eat french fries. It will take self discipline, but it is an important step toward getting your children to make healthy choices. Also, choose food from the five main food groups: fruits and vegetables, grains, dairy, meat and other proteins. This will give your child the opportunity to try an array of food and find healthy items that they want. Your child will be less likely to ask for unhealthy food when they are getting a variety of it from the main food groups.

Plan healthy snacks so that your child will not be enticed by empty calorie food choices. Make sure that fruit and vegetables are easily accessible and provide tasty dip along with it. Also, provide snacks such as low fat cheese or yogurt, which do not require preparation. Teach your children healthy recipes that are easy to follow so they can prepare healthy foods themselves as well.
